Now That I Know That I’m Dreaming, What’s Next?

I have been an occasional lucid dreamer my entire life. The first lucid dream I remember was a childhood nightmare. I was at a family gathering and suddenly I noticed that the faces of the adults were distorted and grotesque. The nose of one woman was shaped like the handle of a tea cup. I immediately realized I was in a nightmare and began desperately trying to wake up. I felt myself paralyzed in my bed, trying to call to my mother to wake me up, but I could not speak. These nightmares persisted into my adulthood. I even instructed my wife to wake me if it sounded like I was calling out to her in my sleep.

But more recently, my lucid dreams have become more playful and liberating. In one fairly typical stress dream, I was at work but forgot my badge and couldn’t get to my office. The security guards chased and caught up with me. But suddenly I realized it was only a dream and felt that it was hysterical. I waved my hand through the face of the man who was restraining me, proving to myself and him that he was just a phantom. I broke free and began dancing around, singing silly songs and saying “You aren’t real! This is just a dream!”
